Beyond Frustration with Resolve

Image
I've been learning how to effectively use Davinci Resolve for color grading my video clips but, unfortunately, it has been a very steep uphill battle thus far. In a previous blog entry I mentioned that this software reminds me of some RAW file conversion software that I've attempted to use in the past. What these programs share in common is that I could not find a way to effectively control my output so I abandoned them. Unfortunately, the powerful Davinci Resolve very much reminds me of those abandoned software programs. Let's put aside some basic color correcting for now and talk about the interface itself... Every single time I try to access something, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it the way I want to do it. I spent hours last night trying to access "curves"... well, I could access the curves, one channel at a time, but I still have no idea how to get Resolve to show me all the curves at once   (each channel in its own curve)  s

Almost Finished Closet

This morning my health was stable and I felt well... and the weather was beautiful for working outdoors (it is already raining though)... so, I pulled out all my power tools and got to work finishing up trim in the new walk-in closet. Next, is to lay the flooring... an ebony stained hardwood floor (yes, real wood, not plastic) which will run through the entire bedroom. Before I can install this flooring, however, I need to paint the room. I don't want to get any paint on this new flooring so I'll do all the painting before I install the flooring.  Here are some photos of the walk-in closet... That is some of the hardwood flooring being used as spacers.

Videography Coursework

Wow... The software programs I am trying to learn for my videography coursework are insanely complex layered with features buried within features. I wouldn't say I am overwhelmed but I am left feeling like I am starting this coursework knowing absolutely nothing about video production. I'm not lost... I'm not overwhelmed... but... I guess I am frustrated by the workflow and lack of logical placement of tools and features. So, I guess I am a bit lost. My focus for the past day or so has been on learning how to effectively use Davinci Resolve 12 for color grading. I haven't even gotten to actually adjusting colors the way I would like with this program just yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to use each of the program's features. So far, I'm not too impressed with this program... it is reminding me of some photography RAW conversion software programs that I dislike so much that I refuse to use them (so I use others instead). We'll see if it grows on
