New Skates for Gee

Image
T his evening, we headed up to Burlington to purchase a new pair of figure skates for Gee.  She plans to skate before some of Kenzie's figure skating lessons in preparation of skating with Lukey and Kenzie at Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park at Christmastime.   Sheila hasn't skated in decades so this will be interesting.  I would like to join them but I know my spinal injuries could not handle skating and a fall would be, at a minimum, painful for my spinal injuries or, at worst, devastating.  Instead, I'll be trying to shoot some photos and maybe some video of them skating.  And, honestly, I really don't need another TBI by falling on the ice either.   Sheila wasn't sure what size skate she needed so she grabbed a generic brand skate that was easily accessible to us just to try for size.  She laced the skate up but, when she stood on the one foot with the skate, she didn't seem all that stable.  The blade on this particular brand of skate was cheap too.  As I

Gee and Kenzie Run a 5K Together

Image
K enzie has been participating in Girls on the Run this school year.  Girls on the Run is a program that is designed to build confidence and character.  As a part of this program, she has been training after school for a 5K run.  Each of the girls can have a running partner so she asked Gee if she would like to do the run with her and, of course, Gee wanted to do this 5K run the moment Kenzie asked her.   Unfortunately, running had been a bit of a problem for Gee.  She was getting some pain in her joints whenever she ran so she had stopped running and replaced the running with walking and yoga.  Gee started training for the 5K run right away anyway by starting very slowly.  Then, Gee had some possible heart problems that were picked up by her fitness smart watch.  We quickly scheduled a few appointments with the appropriate doctors and, fortunately, Gee was cleared for a 5K run with Kenzie.   (After some tests, we found that the possible heart problems were not worth mentioning.  What

Kenzie, Gee and a Dollhouse

Image
We were happy to have Kenzie visit with us again over the weekend.  This gave her a chance to play with her dollhouse with Gee. The dollhouse that I had built for Kenzie a few years ago has been buried in one of the bedrooms that Adam resided in when he last visited a few months ago. As a result, this dollhouse hasn't gotten much use in the past six months or so because it was sitting behind a bunch of new kitchen supplies for our new kitchen in this bedroom.   Our kitchen renovation was put on hold the moment Sheila was diagnosed with cancer again almost a year and a half ago so all the supplies we had already bought for this project were piled up against a wall in the spare bedroom.  That project is now on indefinite hold due to the costs of cancer treatments and a few other reasons and Kenzie's townhouse dollhouse was residing somewhere behind all of these kitchen supplies...  until Sunday. Gee dug out the dollhouse and brought it out to the living room.  While Gee

New Car For Sheila

Image
We'd had enough of Sheila's piece of shi... uhhh, junk... Hyundai Sonata and Sheila has been feverishly hunting for a Honda Accord for the past month or so. About two years ago, Sheila decided she wanted her next car to be a Honda Accord but has been paying off her Hyundai in the meantime. She found one a few days ago on a used car website...  we then squeezed in a test ride a day or so later... we told the dealer we liked it and we wanted it... and we picked it up the following day, yesterday. Both the bank and the dealership were very accommodating in getting everything done within hours. This Honda Accord is a significant upgrade compared to her old Hyundai Sonata. There aren't enough negative adjectives to accurately describe that old hunk of junk. What I can say in clear, concise words is we will never buy another Hyundai. This Honda rides so much more smoothly than her old car. It is far roomier inside too which Honda's are known for ever since their 1970'

A Quick Visit

Image
Liza and the grandkids came to visit Gee yesterday. It was definitely a visit that Gee needed! It was a short but sweet visit. Although short, they managed to squeeze in a few hands of Uno, playing with some trains, opening a box full of new school clothes, and Kenzie got to see her flowergirl dress for mommy's fast-approaching wedding.  We have a day set aside for the grandkids this week... no medical appointments... just fun. If the weather cooperates (a rarity this summer) then we will take the kids on a day cruise. If not, then we'll do some fun indoor activities instead. We're looking forward to it!

Colorful Leaf Art Project

Image
After raking and playing in all the leaves out in the backyard, we headed indoors with a collection of colorful autumn leaves that Lukey and Kenzie had collected. Gee pulled out some wax paper... some crayons... some newspaper... and then Gee, Lukey and Kenzie put together two pieces of colorful art by diving into an autumn leaf art project. This art is being shipped to Uncle Adam who recently commented that he was missing some of Vermont's autumn color. Although he is missing some of Vermont's autumn color, Adam is fortunate enough to be enjoying an authentic Octoberfest in Germany (which definitely interests me far more than some funky-colored trees) .  The kids had a lot of fun putting together this little art project with Gee... After cleaning up the kitchen, the kids then made some delicious chocolate chip cookies, from scratch, with Gee's help. Then Kenzie picked up the telephone and called Nan and Pop to brag about making cho

A Few Photos Of Gee

Image
I'm experiencing some poor health (I ran out of one of my medications so the next week or so will be quite miserable until this medication finally arrives) so I'm just sitting around at my computer sifting through some photos.  I came across a few photos of Gee that I shot this summer... I have many photos of Sheila but these four stood out this morning.... I recently shared a sunset photo very similar to this one, below, but I captured Sheila at the edge of the frame in this one... Sheila is pretty easy to photograph on any day but she is exceptionally easy to photograph when she is "Gee"... of course, Lukey and Kenzie make it easy too!

Kayaking with Miss Mackenzie

Image
It is almost a year beyond when this occurred but here is the long awaited video of Miss Mac kenzie kayaking with Gee! (Scroll to the bottom of this post for the video.) It was a beautiful sunny day but one more optimally suited for sailing because it was so windy. Adam was out on the sailboat so Sheila and I headed for the kayaks with Lukey and Kenzie. The kids kept track of Adam the entire time we were out there and Adam whizzed by us a few times to say hello.  As we got dressed for the kayaks, Lukey grabbed Papa's NASA ballcap and Kenzie decided to wear Gee's large-brimmed hat. In hindsight, we should have packed the top of Gee's hat with a t-shirt or something so it wouldn't keep sliding down over Kenzie's face. This year, we have hats and stylish sunglasses for the kids.  The lake on this particular morning was very choppy which made any video I captured with a camera mounted on the bow of a kayak very bouncy, wobbly and, unfortunately, almost nausea
