Some Decent Sleep

It is amazing what just a couple of nights of halfway decent sleep can do for one's emotional well-being! After our appointment with the Oncologist and putting that stressful waiting period behind us (awaiting test results which determine specific treatment)... and after arranging for counseling with an outstanding counselor specializing in cancer... and after arranging for insurance coverage for additional treatment to help with the side-effects of ten years of cancer treatment... Sheila managed to get a couple of nights of halfway decent sleep.   She still didn't sleep well and she is still understandably struggling with some anxiety but she managed to calm down enough to catch up on a little bit of sleep. This was enough to see a visible difference in Sheila's demeanor this morning.   That is great news! This evening we'll be making some Kansas City-style country ribs and homemade fries... That should help with both of our attitudes!

Balance

Systemic Mastocytosis requires a delicate balance of rest, diet and medications in order to keep my body as stable as possible. In addition to managing my medications closely, I need to effectively monitor and manage my use of energy.  If my energy gets too low, my health crashes into anaphylaxis, neurological issues and/or miserable intestinal issues. If I cut back on rest, I struggle with the same problems. If I stray from my diet... same thing. If I forget a dose of medications... same thing. After well over a decade of managing my own health, I'm pretty good at listening to what my body is telling me about my health because, if I don't, my health often will cascade out of control before I even get a chance to throw specific extra medications at the problem. Sometimes, however, things can get out of control for no known reason... today was one of those times. I had a fairly productive morning doing a few little things that are all hobby-related. This kind of stuff isn&

Some Pain and Changing Positions

Image
After showering this morning, I came back to the bedroom to find Sheila propped up in bed and reading.  Considering the circumstances, it seems she is feeling quite well but not well enough to be frustrated by the inactivity. I'm not sure boredom has stepped in yet either because she is probably still catching up on much needed rest and sleep.  What I have noticed and understand all too well is her careful search and selection of different positions in order to find some comfort and less pain. Right now she is taking her first shower since before the surgery so I expect her pain to increase after this little bit of activity and pressure. Any movement, so far, has been quite painful and she is still moving quite slowly. As I mentioned in previous blog entries, the area where the surgeon removed a few lymph nodes hurts the most and this still holds true this morning.  All in all, however, I think she is doing quite well considering the past week and a half... and, it was n

Health Isn't Recovering Much

After the holidays and including our annual trek to the largest train show in the US every January, my health is always in need of a few months of recovery. My health crashes to crazy lows and it requires months...  yes, months... of recovery. This is what can be expected whenever I push through a couple of months and, in the process, wear my body down far lower than it should ever be pushed.  We are at the end of March now and I'm still struggling with exceptionally poor health. My days consist of personal hygiene (which alone is oftentimes enough to sap me of whatever little energy I have and to knock me down for the day) and cooking meals for myself. That is about all my health can handle each day during these monotonous periods of lousy health.  On relatively "better" days (just one step above 'lousy'), I do get some physical therapy accomplished first thing in the morning. My spine still needs daily physical therapy. I seem to be able to add this into my

Some Work Outdoors

It is supposed to be sunny and warm outside again today so I've switched gears and pushed Lukey's little railroad Christmas present aside so I can get outside to get some much needed winterizing work done on the house. I hope to get this accomplished relatively quickly and easily. Then I will come back indoors and get some work accomplished indoors, as long as my health allows. We are cutting Christmas trees tomorrow morning so I need to ensure I am well rested for that. This means I will accomplish absolutely nothing after noon today so I can sleep and rest for the remainder of the day. Cutting Christmas trees is usually a fun morning in the snow for everyone and then a nice leisurely lunch in a restaurant. Tomorrow morning promises to be muddy this year though. Hopefully, all will go smoothly and not wear me down!

A Day Of Rest And Recovery

Image
Today is one of those boring days of rest and recovery. On days such as this one, I must be extra careful to not tax my body and health... I must get extra rest... if not, my health will fail again quickly. I was having great difficulty with my vision all week but I didn't think much about it since it is a relatively common problem for me. Vision problems come and go regularly. I purposely try not to think about it because losing my vision or hearing can really get me a bit anxious. As the week progressed, e ventually, some other symptoms started to appear.  Yesterday evening, my health crashed. I spent some time in the bathroom... sick... I was so dizzy that I almost fell over while sitting in the bathroom! Needless to say, I needed emergency medications.  I'm feeling a bit more stable today but rather drowsy from all the emergency medications and extra medications. Regardless of last night's problems, I had planned to take it easy today anyway since we have a Christ

Fireplace Finished in Time for Christmas

Image
As some of you have already seen in my Facebook posts, I managed to get the fireplace project finished just in time for Christmas.  Actually, I don't think it was finished until 4:30pm on Christmas Eve!  Then, after cleaning the house of all the construction debris and sawdust, we carefully carried an ice-covered Christmas tree into the house and decorated it.  Between wrapping presents, putting together toys for the grandchildren and decorating, I don't think we made it to bed until 1:30am on Christmas morning.   Since we started renovating the house about five years ago, we have seen various parts of the house in multiple stages of construction.  So the purpose of this post is to show some photos of the progression of the living room project over the course of a few years.  There is no doubt that the living room is a much more comfortable and 'warmer' room today than ever before. Of course we still have a lot to do... ceilings, floors, another wall which is shared
