Rockefeller Center and FAO Schwarz

A fter a short stroll through Bryant Park this past weekend, Sheila, Lukey, Kenzie and I walked up the few blocks to Rockefeller Center. We walked up Sixth Avenue so we approached Rockefeller Center from that side. We had hoped to bring the kids to FAO Schwarz when we were here this past Christmas but the line to get into the store was ridiculously long so we aborted that part of our Christmas plan. This day was a far better day. It was much more quiet which allowed us to play with whatever we wanted in the store! As we walked up 49th Street from Sixth Avenue, we passed the Rainbow Room entrance. Just beyond the NBC Studios and Rainbow Room entrance is one of the entrances to FAO Schwarz... One of the reasons we had hoped that the store would be relatively quiet is because we wanted the kids to be able to play a bit on the giant keyboard, if FAO Schwarz still had that giant toy made famous by the movie "Big". Home from Portsmouth

W e arrived back home from our weekend in Portsmouth yesterday afternoon. The three hour drive was uneventful but Sheila has been sick since shortly before arriving home. At first we thought she might have a stomach virus but now we aren't sure if it's a stomach virus or COVID or even a result of some bad food. She is feeling rather poorly and hasn't eaten since breakfast in Portsmouth yesterday morning. We both tested for COVID this morning and we tested negative but that doesn't mean much since these home tests are known to be highly inaccurate indicating negative results when the person is really infected with the virus. We'll continue testing and we'll see what happens. Hopefully, she'll feel like eating something by dinnertime tonight. (...and, hopefully, be able to hold it down.) Deck Stain on Garden Railroad Roadbed and Custom Truss Bridge

I spent much of the day yesterday working on our garden railroad again. I stained all of the bare wood for two reasons... first, bare wood looks unfinished but I wanted more of a finished look and next, the deck stain that I used will help to protect the wood from the elements. I also primed the new truss bridge. Right now it is primed black but I will probably finish it with a medium gray color and then weather it. I plan to add some gravel to this front section of the railroad to be used as ballast. In an effort to keep the gravel from inevitably falling off this elevated train station section, I needed to add some short guard rails along the edge of this decking to keep the gravel up where it belongs. Once I had cut and installed all of these side rails, I was ready to do some staining. Lukey's Magic Orb

W hile we were at FAO Schwarz this past weekend with Lukey and Kenzie, we saw quite a few demonstrations of toys but one demonstration immediately caught our eye. As we approached one end of the store, our attention was captured by this woman with a magic floating orb and she easily drew us in while holding our attention. I could clearly tell that Lukey was quite interested. The orb would float in between open hands above and below the orb and then the open hands would move to each side while the orb continued to float in mid-air... then the orb would fly off and around her body... the orb would slowly lower toward the ground and then back upward... sometimes hands were above and below, other times hands were on each side... sometimes no hands were anywhere near this floating orb! This glowing orb just floated around our young female magician. After we watched her short demonstration, I asked Lukey if that was something of interest and he enthusiastically said, "YES!&q

Heading to Manhattan

A fter our absurdly long drive to Long Island the previous day, we got up early the following morning to catch a train on the Long Island Railroad. Our hotel was backed-up against the railroad tracks so Lukey spent much of the night watching trains go back and forth past our windows. There was only an alley between our hotel window and the elevated railroad tracks. Most of the Long Island Railroad is electrified but I had forgotten that the far eastern end of Long Island still needs diesel engines to run trains. I hadn't heard a diesel run on the Long Island Railroad in decades so was shocked to hear a diesel pass by the hotel that night. The following day, my dad reminded me that the eastern end of Long Island is not electrified so they need to pull the passenger cars with diesel locomotives. Walking Around Portsmouth

W e were in Portsmouth two weeks ago for Sheila's mom's burial at sea and it was a nice, and exceedingly rare, weekend out-of-town. My health is caused us to cancel many, many planned weekends out-of-town over the past four years. This was our second visit to this historic New England coastal city so we had a pretty good idea of the things we wanted to do. We've always planned to visit this city again and this burial at sea provided us with this opportunity. On our first night in town, we went for a walk around the downtown area and even walked across the Memorial Bridge into Kittery, Maine. We did the same when we were here the first time about ten years ago and this was something we really wanted to do again especially since the weather was beautiful. Back to the Hotel

A fter our short visit to Manhattan this past Saturday, we rode on the Long Island Railroad from Grand Central Madison to Rockville Centre then walked the few short blocks back to the hotel. I have to say that, as a tourist wanting easy and quick access to midtown Manhattan, the new Madison extension to Grand Central is very convenient! I needed to make a short stop at a pharmacy so we stopped at a pharmacy that was next to the hotel. While we were there, we picked up a few additional drinks for the hotel. Below, we are waiting for Sheila to come out of the pharmacy... we somehow got separated in the store so checked out separately... Custom Built Truss Bridge

S o, the other day, I built a retaining wall for the front side of our little garden railroad and wrote about it here in this blog previously. That new "model" retaining wall looks great and I have to say it was a brilliant idea to add this detail. Today, I started working on building a truss bridge for the back side of the garden railroad. I've been sketching different ideas over the past couple of months because I always knew I wanted one of these bridges on this garden railroad but I finally decided on a plan this morning. Once I had the plan sketched and figured out all the dimensions of each of the parts, I immediately headed outside to start cutting lumber and building a truss bridge. My civil engineering days are long behind me but, if I remember correctly, this would be a Warren Truss bridge due to the equilateral triangles across each side of the bridge. I 'm still recovering from my last bout with COVID so let me mention this continually lingering illness so nobody mistakes no news for good news. My breathing is quite lousy... I'm constantly trying to cough up the thickest of thick mucus... I'm having difficulty breathing when laying down which makes getting some much needed sleep more difficult... I have extremely painful joints... and I'm generally feeling quite lousy. Even so, I've still been trying to accomplish something, anything, each day. The other day, I decided that I didn't like the front side of our garden railroad. I have this front section up on 4x4 stilts so it has always looked a bit weird to me. I'm planning to build a train station for this part of the railroad. First I need to figure out the best way to make a model building that is completely weatherproof. Very Light Weathering of Truss Bridge

I n my previous blog entry, I wrote about my custom designed, homebuilt truss bridge that I have been working on lately for my little garden railroad. I had applied far too many coats of paint in varying colors and shades in an attempt to get the color I had envisioned. I eventually landed on a pale olive color for this bridge like many truss bridges in real life. After writing that previous blog entry, I also applied additional shades of green to this bridge to add some tonal depth to this paint job. The single shade of green was a bit "flat". I'm not referring to the finish of the paint... ie, gloss, satin, matte, flat... but referring to the tonal depth of the paint job. I had applied one or two more shades of green lightly with a dry brushing technique to add some tonal depth.
