A Snowy Weekend

Image
The snowstorm that was forecast to hit us actually did materialize and it dropped a fair amount of snow on us.  Sheila and I spent about three hours clearing out the driveway, the paths, the mailbox, the fuel tank, and the roof.  This is the longest amount of time snow removal has ever taken us! We removed about 14 inches of snow and, since then,we've had another few inches.  I actually expected far more snow to be dropped on us this storm but, considering how much work it was to clean up today, I'm thankful that we got considerably less snow than was forecasted. Thanks to some of Sheila's old co-workers, we have a nice snowblower and that has come in handy many, many times since it was gifted to us.  This helps out my spine significantly but, I should point out, it is still a painful experience.  The snowblower is actually a bit too heavy for Sheila to handle so I am the one to manhandle the snowblower while Sheila gets started on raking the roof and doing a little

It's Only 9am and I'm Out of Spoons

I awoke feeling much less energetic than on an average day. Shortly after getting out of bed I realized that I probably would not get much done on the toilet project today since I was already feeling rather lousy and I wasn't thinking clearly. My spine was still hurting enough to make sleeping difficult which also made it difficult getting up out of bed. These weren't good signs for having a productive day with a home repair project. When I made my way out of the bedroom, I had looked out the window to see how this forecasted "storm" is progressing because I knew that if it was as bad as the forecast insisted, then I would need to spend my time and energy outside clearing off the roof of heavy snow. When I looked out the window I saw only two or three inches... for us, this is pretty much an every-morning dusting. I shook my head at this lame "storm" and continued on my way.  While I was taking my morning slew of medications, I decided it would be wiser

Kenzie and Lukey Arrived at the Lake

Image
Kenzie and Lukey stealthily arrived at the lake house this morning. Sheila and I were doing some food shopping in preparation to their arrival but they arrived at the house before we did... We saw Liza's car in our parking area when we arrived home... we pulled the car up to the back door so we could unload the car... but we found the back door to the house was still locked! I retrieved the key we hid for Liza... it was still in it's hiding place... and we entered the quiet house...  When we got to the living room, we could hear unrestrainable giggling coming from the loft... sure enough, Kenzie, Lukey and Liza were hiding in the loft and Kenzie was giggling uncontrollably! Before mommy had to leave for the day to work, we had some lunch. Fortunately, for Kenzie, we had just finished food shopping so we had a full refrigerator of food to choose from... naturally, she chose her usual staple, fresh strawberries... and some Mickey Mouse chips, some cheese, and a small bowl o

Another Stunningly Beautiful Day

Image
Today was another stunningly beautiful day. We expected the rains from the remnants of the tropical storm (named "Bill" according to Sheila) to cause problems for much longer than we experienced. Fortunately, this storm hit us through the night and left us with a beautiful day today. Last night, however, was brutal!  We had high winds and heavy rains while the winds blowing across the lake and toward our house caused a bit of a rise in lake elevation on our side of the lake like a mini-storm surge. The lake completely covered our beach and even made its way up a few steps toward the lawn.  This storm reminded me of terrible storms on the waterfront of Long Island when I was growing up. I laid in bed worrying about the power, the roof and the boats while wondering what the high winds were blowing away from our deck and yard. This house is sort of like a houseboat as it is perched out over the lake so the house was also making many unusual sounds as it was battered by
