Interests

My overall everyday health is rather poor due to my debilitating disabilities so, needless to say, this affects my ability to stay active in any particular interests.  As my health continues to deteriorate, I adapt my hobbies and interests based upon my capabilities at that moment.  Adapt, improvise and overcome.

Fortunately, there are so many things I still would like to accomplish that I find interesting so letting go of some things as they become increasingly difficult to accomplish due to my health is easier than one would think.  Since I have so many hobbies and interests, I simply move on to something which I can accomplish with the current limitations of disabilities.

My primary interests lately lie in astronomy, photography and the fine arts.  I've been active in astronomy and photography since I was about 12 years old.  I enjoy capturing all of our family activities in photography and video so I always seem to have a camera in my hand or within reach.  I've been playing the piano since I was four years old and this is something I enjoy doing when I'm feeling up to it.  I also enjoy painting and sketching in various mediums.  However, even these seemingly sedentary activities do take a back seat to my health at times.

When I am having an exceptionally good day, I enjoy working on renovating our small home. Well... assuming I have building materials on hand while I am feeling exceptionally well.  There is only so much I can accomplish even on a good day.  Driving someplace to pick up building materials always wears down my health quickly so this is always done when I am feeling rather well.  Shopping for anything and then accomplishing something else that requires energy doesn't happen all that often because of overwhelming fatigue and worse problems.  I still manage to get things accomplished around the house, little by little, so our small home is becoming more comfortable and, if I do say so myself, more appealing.

Another part of my day when my health allows, of course, is my usual physical therapy.  My extensive spinal injuries require ongoing daily physical therapy.  If I become sedentary, my spinal condition worsens exponentially.  As a result, whenever my health allows, I spend some time with physical therapy exercises.  Fortunately, I enjoy exercising...  I always have and I always will so this is big reason why I feel 'physical therapy' should be listed here with my 'interests'.

Other interests include sailing, kayaking, biking and aerospace. These activities, however, are much more dependent upon the quality of my health so they tend to take a back seat far more often than not.  Other hobbies include model railroading and rocketry.  Even with my disabilities, it is difficult finding time to be active in all my hobbies and interests for any stretch of time.

Regardless of my health, I do try to accomplish at least one thing each day. I believe in exercising the mind, the body, the soul.  I believe in staying as productive as possible.   And I definitely believe in learning something new each day.
