Snowy Memorial Day Weekend

I have experienced almost twenty Vermont springs and this past spring has been the most unusual, by far.  Typically, spring in Vermont occurs in the blink of an eye without much fanfare after experiencing weeks of quicksand-like mud.  I have seen a few springs with some stubborn winter snowfall refusing the melt away.  Climate-wise, those snowy, long winters were followed by typical springs but the snow took longer to melt simply because there was so much more snow to melt than in average winters.  After those winters of exceptionally heavy snowfall, I have seen snow skiing in Stowe through to mid-May.

We didn't see all that much snow this past winter though.  Actually, through much of the winter we saw bare roads and bare landscapes.  We did, however, see some late storms with snow falling from the sky long after what is considered normal but these few storms were short-lived. This past weekend was one such weekend.

A cold, wet Memorial Day weekend left snowy mountaintops.
Here is a snow covered Mount Mansfield on Memorial Day.
This Memorial Day weekend was cold and windy.  Each morning we awoke to temperatures in the 30's outside and temperatures in the 50's inside the house. Saturday and Sunday the clouds were so low that the mountaintops were obscured in clouds so getting photos of snowy peaks was impossible from our location.  It rained heavily at our elevation all through Saturday and Sunday with temperatures barely rising above a very damp 40 degrees while the mountaintops all around us saw more than a foot of snow.

Although the house was again in the 50's this morning, the temperatures outside were much closer to normal. And, perhaps more importantly, the sun was shining and the sky was clear!  Now that the mountaintops were no longer obscured in the clouds, we could clearly see all the snow that had fallen around us at higher elevations.  The ski slopes saw some spring snow skiers as well as early season hikers.

Let's hope that spring is here again and summer is well on the way!
