A Productive Sunday

New beadboard ceiling...
Yesterday's exceptionally bad luck was left behind and today ended up being a productive day!

I decided to install the ceiling in the new half bath. I had already pre-finished the boards for this project because it is easier to stain and poly when the boards are on sawhorses rather than on the ceiling. Gravity works against you when staining anything above you so I was thinking ahead and pre-finished the ceiling. Today, I installed this ceiling and it is looking great!

The hallway and laundry room adjacent to this bathroom both have wood ceilings. We really like the warmth of the wood ceilings and plan to continue installing wood ceilings as we renovate each part of the house.

I also added a bit more drywall today. I managed to salvage just one small piece of drywall from yesterday's catastrophe. This one piece allowed me to continue on with another project too...

I had to install an electrical switch box that is deeper than this thinner-than-standard wall so it was sticking out of the wall by about 5/8 inch. I decided the easiest way to remedy this situation was to cut some trim for around the box. I will sand smooth the edges, rounding them over a bit, and paint this box extension white to match the switches and switch plate cover.

An extension for the oversized switch box...
Also included here is a quick photo of the bottom row of drywall, the new sub-floor, and the toilet flange. Notice the plug still blocking the drain pipe... I haven't glued and screwed this flange in place yet. That can't be done until after the finished floor is installed. Then I'll remove the temporary cap, install the flange, wax ring and the toilet.

At some point very soon I need to start cutting and building the custom door (I know that once I install that toilet we will want to use the bathroom). Staining and a few coats of poly will require some time so I really should get a jump on this project too. There will be quite a bit of trim to install, as well as staining and multiple coats of poly so maybe the door can be stained and poly'ed at the same time as working on the rest of the trim.

Little by little, this half bath is taking shape...
