Clear Skies and Sunny

When we awoke this morning, the sky was a crystal clear blue and the sun was shining brightly! We hadn't seen this in weeks! The day was off to a good start for a change. We immediately headed toward the hospital again to visit with Whitney, Wayne, and Ellie, our little warrior princess.

When we arrived at the quiet, empty hospital it was early Saturday morning so the hospital was eerily quiet. We made our way to the PICU which is in the opposite corner of the hospital from the main entrance. As we approached Ellie's room, we could see the door was open with no commotion in the area around her room... a good sign...

We stepped into the room and it was relatively quiet other than the warning tones and beeps indicating relatively minor issues... the tones and beeps cutting through the silence.

Mom was sitting on her bed in the corner of the room, dad was still sleeping, and Ellie seemed to be resting quietly but breathing deeply...

The nurses are in the room 24 hours a day and constantly attending to Ellie's needs...

As Gee was softly brushing Ellie's hand and talking to her, Ellie opened her eyes gazing wide-eyed at her... just like the weeks of clouds outside finally parting to allow the sun to shine through... and she grasped Gee's finger tightly...

Her tiny hand tightly grasped Gee's finger and wouldn't let go... she held on so tightly that when it was time to leave quite some time later, Gee had to pry her little fingers off her own finger...

Gee just kept talking softly to her... Ellie kept staring back at her, wide-eyed, as she seemed to listen intently, still tightly grasping Gee's finger...

Eventually, Ellie was clearly experiencing some pain again so her medications were increased so she could rest more peacefully. Gee pried herself away from the warrior princess as we said our goodbyes so everyone could rest and have some privacy again. Mommy then moved in to soothe Ellie back to sleep as we were leaving them...

By mid-afternoon, Ellie was moved into a significantly larger room in the PICU which has a long wall of windows. We visited this new room as we were leaving and it is a significant upgrade... albeit still in the PICU. Although it was a bright sunny day for Ellie today, she is still in critical but stable condition. We're back home now but hopefully Ellie is still recovering nicely and peacefully.

Although nobody likes spending time in the PICU to visit loved ones, today was definitely a day of clear skies and bright sun in more ways than one. It was nice to see the sun again today but it was especially nice for Ellie to awaken to spend some quality time with Gee and Papa. Of course, our thoughts are with Whitney and Wayne too as they continue to live in the PICU with their new daughter.
