Putting Green Fully Seeded

The additional bag of grass seed for our new putting green arrived in the mail this morning so I changed my plans and finished up preparing the putting green before lunch today.  It didn't take long to finish up that project although my spine wasn't too thrilled with this project this morning.  Walking is exceptionally painful again this evening.

I loosened up the soil in the putting green first...  cleaned out a bucketful of small stones (for the third time), roots and debris...  then seeded the green with the new bag of grass seed.  I had already put down 2lbs of seed the other day but that bag only got me less than halfway across the putting green.  A 5lb bag arrived this morning which allowed me to finish the seeding job.  Since I had more than enough seed this time, I just re-seeded the entire putting green again today.

Things are starting to look good.  I put a Fescue mix down in the "rough" or "mini-pitching-fairway" adjacent to the putting green last week and we already have new grass popping up out of the soil there.   You can see some of this new Fescue grass in the foreground dirt in the photo at left.  So that area is coming along too.

I hope to see some new grass popping up in the putting green by next weekend.  We put sod down around the perimeter of most of the putting green (taken from the area that will be the new putting green) and that is doing well too.  I removed the existing grass from the putting green because it was not the type of grass that you want on a putting green.  A putting green needs grass that lies low and flat to the ground so the golf ball can roll relatively easily.  The original thicker, taller grass is better for other areas so we just moved all this grass to different areas around the yard.  This left a big dirt patch that needed to be graded, cleaned up and seeded with the appropriate grass seed.  I'm happy that this project is finished.  My spine is exceptionally relieved!  All that bending over with shovels, rakes, thatchers and cultivators in hand was rough on my spinal injuries.  Now I need some recovery time.

Before dinner tonight, I did some pruning of shrubs around the putting green.  I think I might spread some wildflower mix around some of the surrounding area back there too.

I look forward to all this new grass growing in the coming weeks!
