A Room for Adam's Visit

Adam will be arriving for a relatively short visit from somewhere on the opposite side of our planet in the next few days so it has been a very busy couple of weeks around the house.

As the regular readers of this blog already know, we moved our master bedroom to Adam's old bedroom when he left for the Air Force. I tore that bedroom apart... aired it out for months... and rebuilt it completely to include a rebuilt closet, rebuilt shelving and desk, new flooring and a new wood plank ceiling. This bedroom has been exceptionally comfortable for Sheila and me!

This heavy laminate wood flooring has a vapor barrier already
adhered to the bottom of each plank so we were able
to install this directly on top of the subflooring.
The original, long term plan was to turn our old bedroom into a room for me to keep all my models... mostly trains... and to create a space which would be better suited for building and working on models rather than our kitchen table. This project, however, was always on the back burner because there were more important things to renovate first.

A couple of months ago, Adam told us he would be visiting us this summer and there seemed to be some question whether we would have the space for him since he knew we moved into his old bedroom. I wrote him to let him know we would have a clean room for him if he came to visit. It was just a matter of moving stored junk around and finishing our old bedroom that we vacated when moving into Adam's bedroom.

We spent some time at the lake house so nothing got done on this house beforehand since I had all sorts of lake house stuff to get ready. When we arrived back here at the house, my health needed quite a bit of time to stabilize and recover after all the activity at the lake but I've managed to have a very productive couple of weeks.

I'm happy to say that now the room is pretty much ready for Adam's visit. We painted, built and finished a walk-in closet (which is where my clothes reside, finally), installed beautiful wood flooring, built and installed a new dutch door, inspected the electrical and swapped out all the old electrical fixtures for new ones. All we need to do now is tack in some more baseboard... move a double bed into the room... and add some bedding. We even have new curtains arriving tomorrow for the windows!

We look forward to spending some time with Adam and hearing about his cultural experiences and his first duty assignment... and I suspect he is looking forward to some food from his own culture at this point...
Planks at the end of the run at the far wall left no room for sliding and locking them into place.
I had to trim off the end tab of the plank and just glue it to the adjoining plank to hold it in place.
This was easy-peasy on the table saw though.

Sometime in the future (after other more important projects and renovations), I plan to add a white wood plank ceiling to this room... a custom wood bookcase at the end of the room... and a new bay with three windows to house my desk/workbench for building models. This desk/workbench combo will look out the three new windows into our yard.

The room looks great now though!
