Amtrak Day Trip Preview
Yesterday, we surprised the grandchildren with their first journey on Amtrak!
I'm completely worn out today so I'm only going to share a few photos and write a short preview of our day...
Lukey and Kenzie have been itching for a train ride for years (especially on Amtrak) so we finally arranged schedules with Liza, Nan and Pop and threw together a trip on Amtrak so Lukey and Kenzie could finally get to experience a day trip on Amtrak.
The kids didn't know anything about this trip until shortly before getting in the car to head to the train station so it was a complete surprise for them. By the time Nan and Pop arrived at the station to join us, both Kenzie and Lukey were very excited about this much anticipated journey.
The plan was to board Amtrak in Waterbury heading south... find a place to stop to have lunch... then hop on the northbound Amtrak to head back to Waterbury.
We knew we would need a three to four hour layover to have time for lunch and unforeseen delays. There is only one southbound Amtrak train each day and one northbound train each day so we had to find a location for lunch which would allow for enough time. We found that Brattleboro, Vermont was the perfect place to visit for lunch.
We had an awesome lunch (as well as some awesome beer) at Whetstone Station Brewery overlooking the Connecticut River... walked around downtown Brattleboro... walked across the bridge to New Hampshire... visited some stores... and then boarded the train again to head home. It was a rather perfect day and the kids had a great time!
There is a lot to write about but, since I am completely exhausted, I'll just share a few photos and revisit this topic again soon...
Kenzie is impatiently waiting for our train to arrive...
Finally on Amtrak! Excitedly watching the autumn colors zip by as the Amtrak locomotive horn blows at every crossing...
Both Kenzie and Lukey were excitedly surprised to find fold-down tables at their seats! They had been too excited to eat breakfast until now so they quickly put these newfound tables to use for a late breakfast...
Kenzie and Lukey easily made friends with Conductor Adam (our morning southbound trip) and Conductor Justin (our evening northbound trip)... They played conductor using Gee's phone and their tickets for a good portion of our leg home...
As we were approaching Waterbury, Conductor Justin pulled out his radio and asked Lukey and Kenzie to tell the engineer which door we will be using... they both yelled out, "DOOR THREE". The engineer confirmed... the train squealed to a stop at the Waterbury station... and we were back home...
It was a great day! I will write more about our daylong adventure and share more photos when I am rested...
Now, I need to find some energy to make some Italian Short Ribs for dinner...
