Heading Back Home After Surgery
Before a patient can be discharged from Post-Op Recovery, the patient must be able to effectively void their bladder on their own. Of course, they should also be able to get themselves to the bathroom without falling over to the floor and their vitals should be in a safe, healthy range. If everything checks out okay, then the patient can be discharged and sent home to continue recovery.
One of the problems Sheila has had consistently in her previous two surgeries was bladder paralysis due to general anesthesia. Her team of doctors worked together to come up with a solution so Sheila would not again experience this excruciating problem again this time around. Both Sheila and I are very happy to report that her team of doctors succeeded in solving this problem this time around!
When Sheila was able to effectively void her bladder on her own by mid-afternoon, we began our journey of checking out of Recovery and the hospital. Here, Whitney is wheeling Sheila out of Post-Op Recovery...
We had decided to linger at the hospital for a bit to ensure Sheila would continue to have no problems in voiding her bladder. We needed to pick up a prescription in the hospital pharmacy so we knew that stopping at the pharmacy would kill some time. Her prescription wasn't ready so there was indeed some time to kill anyway...
Sheila was starving so, while we waited for her prescription, we decided to spend a little time in the Garden Atrium where we had all waited during Sheila's surgery. Apparently the Turkey Vegetable Soup of the Day was exceptionally good and Sheila was excited to be eating some real food... all the vegetables in this soup were picked from the rooftop garden at the hospital...
After ensuring that Sheila was still experiencing no problems in voiding her bladder, we slowly made our way to the car and home. At home, I made sure Sheila was comfortable on the couch. Before long, we had our first visitor and I have to say that it was a very nice and welcomed visit. Sheila certainly enjoyed it!
Today, Sheila spent the day on the couch and caught up on a little sleep...
I cooked some breakfast for Sheila... then shared some of my lunch with her. She said she wasn't hungry at all but I knew she would get hungry when she smelled my lunch cooking. Sure enough, she was hungry after smelling my lunch so I just shared my lunch.
After sleeping a few hours, she cleaned herself up a little (only a sponge bath allowed thus far) and we went for a short walk around the grocery store to pick up a few items.
She's a bit sore... with some sharp stinging pain where her lymph nodes were removed (under her arm) and she is moving very slowly but she seems to be recovering just fine...
