A Game Day in Early January

As I wait on a phone call from my doctor's office, I figured I would write about something more lighthearted than all this depressing health nonsense.

In early January, I shot some photos of the grandkids while we were playing "Life Junior". We bought this game for the kids for Christmas and we erroneously expected it to be exactly the same as the original game of "Life" but perhaps simplified and shorter (which sounded good to us!). It actually is quite a different game than the Life game we played all those decades ago when we were kids.

The game board in the Junior version is physically smaller. Money is always in the single digits and transactions are rather rare (we'll save those constant transactions for Monopoly). That being said, it still hurts when you need to pay for something and you only have a dollar sitting on your side of the board. Instead of money being the focus of the game, there are stars to collect by accomplishing productive tasks and visiting enlightening places. The person who collects ten stars first wins the game.

There also is a small deck of "action cards" which you pick up whenever you land on a blank space. Some cards tell you what sort of action you must do. Some cards dictate whether you did a good thing or a bad thing assigning an award or consequence as necessary. The cards also request players tell or explain about various things or act out things like in Charades (we also have Charades Junior... more on that another time). Stars are awarded or taken away as necessary.

Each game is relatively quick (which is a huge plus as far as I'm concerned!). Since the games are relatively fast and you get to see the kids think and act, it actually is a fun game to play with young kids!

Anyway, we had fun with Lukey and Kenzie and they enjoyed Life Junior so much that they insisted we play again yesterday rather than diving into some other new games. I'll write more about yesterday and share some photos again another time. In the meantime, here are a few photos from last month...

Explaining some of the rules and how to play...

The kids still can't read all that well so we had to help them read some of the Action Cards...

Lukey has VIP tickets to Snow Fun, Fun Fair and Mud Puddles....

Counting how many spaces she needs to go before she can ride the "Fun Train" across town to access more places and events...

In this next photo, Kenzie is showing us that she lost a star because she got a ball stuck in a tree...

At the end of each game, each player must tell about all the places they visited (with their VIP tickets) and all the things they accomplished... or screwed up.  I think it is pretty obvious from the smiles in all the photos that the kids enjoy the game of Life Junior!
