Surprise Dinner Guests
After we had finished cleaning up from our concrete work yesterday and while I was making a pasta salad for dinner, we received a call from Liza saying the kids wanted to come over for dinner. Naturally, we thought that was a good idea and told them to come on over.
Lukey helped to start a fire... which was a little smokey at times... Kenzie was afraid the fire department would show up and I think we all went to bed with slightly irritated eyes! The kids made some hot dogs on the fire before dinner. For dinner, we had bacon cheeseburgers and pasta salad.
Since it was one of those days when the moon was high in the sky all afternoon, I decided to take one of the telescopes out so the kids could view the moon as night approached...
Kenzie had a little difficulty correctly positioning her eye over the huge eyepiece but she eventually figured it out. If you are too close or too much to one side of the big eyepiece, you sometimes will see nothing. In this case, most of the time, she was positioning her nose centered on the eyepiece rather than her eye. I think she also had a little difficulty looking through only one eye for some reason. She eventually figured it out though and kept coming back to the telescope throughout the evening. Once she figured out how to position her eye over the eyepiece we had to teach her not to touch the telescope so it doesn't move away from the moon.
This was the view through the eyepiece... well... through one of the eyepieces. For a little while, I used a more powerful eyepiece so we could view the craters a lot more closely. Note: The view through the eyepiece is mirrored in this telescope configuration and I had originally posted the shot of that mirrored image. I decided to mirror the image again to put it in the correct orientation rather than posting a backwards image of the moon here.
Kenzie spent a lot of time watering our newly planted wildflower seeds...
More smoke from the fire. When Gee saw this photo, she asked if Lukey was praying...
It was a productive day and a very nice night. Even the weather was cooperative on this entire day and night! And, we got to view the moon through a telescope throughout the evening.
I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
