A Birthday Party for Nan

Yesterday, we had a little birthday party for Nan in the sweltering heat and humidity.  After Sheila and I spent the morning preparing for this little birthday gathering, I set up air conditioning throughout the house so we could take breaks from the heat inside the more comfortable house.  That worked out well especially when a few passing thundershowers passed through the area during dinner.

We started the day with a much-needed haircut for Lukey.  Here is Lukey before the haircut...

Sheila managed to capture a few good photos of the haircut...

And, here is Lukey after his haircut...

And, a before and after comparison in one image...

While I cut Lukey's hair, Kenzie was keeping cool by playing with the cold water from the hose...

Lukey had no desire to shower after his haircut but he was covered in long cut hair so he opted for getting sprayed with the hose...

The water from the hose was a bit colder than Lukey liked so he did a little whining for some warmer water...  a rough and tough Special Operator he is not...

He still wanted the loose hair sprayed off of him and didn't want to go inside to shower so Liza continued to spray him down in the take-your-breath-away cold water...

Then the kids played with some giant bubbles.  It is easy to see in the photos of the bubbles that, even though it is brutally hot and humid, we still had a fire going all day so that we would have a nice bed of coals for the evening.  The smoke probably helped to keep the bugs away too!

Gee, Lukey and Kenzie picked a couple of bowls of black raspberries from the raspberry vines in our yard.  I think they ate them all before the day was over.

After a nice dinner of barbequed chicken and ribs with sides of New York style potato salad and my own pasta salad, we had some of Nan's birthday cake.  At this point, the thundershowers were departing the area...

Lukey captured these last two photos...

The kids and Gee played a quick game of Monopoly Jr (thankfully, the junior version of this game is rather quick).  John arrived after work while they were playing Monopoly Jr.  I heated up some grilled lemon chicken for him and then we all headed back outside to the fire for some s'mores.

It was a really nice day yesterday.  Happy Birthday to Nan, again!
