Christmas Ornaments

I was playing around with my new Sony a6000 camera this evening and the obvious things to practice shooting were all the Christmas ornaments throughout the house.

The difficulty with these shots in particular is that this is a very low light situation which normally would demand the use of a tripod and long shutter speeds. I decided the push the camera to its limits and use faster shutter speeds, a regular "kit" lens, and no tripod.

Adding a flash to these photos would have ruined the mood of the scene so adding a flash wasn't an option either. This means that if I didn't want to use a tripod, I needed to move into very high ISO sensitivities... which normally would mean very grainy, noisy and oftentimes blurry photos. As you can see in the photos, below, this new camera held up well!

I understand that most people probably have no clue what it means to boast of a camera using high sensitivities so let me explain just a little bit to add some perspective. Almost all of the photos below were shot at ISO 12,800. By comparison, a cellphone shooting a photo at a normal ISO of only 200 or 400 would be grainy, noisy, blurry and just generally fuzzy. I shot these photos at a crazy high ISO of 12,800... handheld... yet these photos are crisp, clean, and sharp. That is impressive even to a photographer! This is almost like putting night vision goggles on my camera but with clarity and without everything being green.

So, this evening, I got to practice a little bit with my new camera... I got to push the camera beyond what I thought were its limits... and I managed to produce some decent photos of some of our Christmas ornaments in the process...
This first photo was shot with my older Sony a7 which does
VERY well in low light conditions... ISO 4000 here (there was still

some daylight when I shot this so that helped), handheld.

After playing around a bit this evening, I'm really happy with what this $300-something camera can do!  This camera will complement my Sony a7 very well and it was at bargain-basement prices.

I'm looking forward to testing this Sony a6000 on some sports and wildlife soon...
