Small Project Between Rain Showers

I've been a little bit busy this week with a new project... finally!

I've been putting off a bunch of projects lately due to ongoing rainy, hot and humid weather, poor health, and medical appointments for both Sheila and me, but mostly due to the absolutely abysmal weather we've had this summer. I needed to get going on at least one project before the snow flies!

I decided to start on a to-do list of about 20 items (most of which I'll never get to this summer) with building and installing a garden window over our kitchen sink. We've been talking about buying a garden window for quite some time but the prices are absurd so I opted to design and build my own. That's my answer and resolution for most things, actually... but this garden window is something new to me.

At this point, I have most of the wood cut and painted with at least one coat of white paint. I still need to cut some wood to length for the frames of the glass panes for the sides of the window that this project is coming along. Actually, all this painting and waiting between coats is eating up the most time. The cutting and installing goes very quickly.  This painting stage of the project is a bit frustrating and, of course, the weather is not cooperating either.

We awoke yesterday morning to heavy rain and I hadn't covered the hole in our wall yet. There was no rain in the forecast so I didn't bother covering things up... that was a mistake!  I now have some plastic to drape across the kitchen window when I'm done for the day or when some rain showers pass on through.

Most of this window is going to be white but I stained and polyurethaned a nice bottom panel inside the garden window to match the interior trim around the window inside the house.

I decided to just push this window out to the end of the soffit above. The soffit and rafters actually help to support this garden window from above. It works out well!

This project is coming along but I wish the painting and finishing would move along much more quickly!  Things should be looking more "finished" in the coming days and I'll post more photos as things progress...
