Sheila was featured on the evening news this evening! I took the easy route and just recorded it with one of my cameras while standing in front of the television.

Christmas Eve Presents

S heila and I have always exchanged Christmas presents on Christmas Eve so we did the same this year. Below are a select few photos from last night. We had a nice night! I received a tabletop micrometer for cutting very fine slices of specimens for viewing and imaging under the microscope... Sheila came home from her office Christmas party this year and was a bit bummed that someone chose to take her Yankee Swap gift. She had a miniature sled that would have worked perfectly with our Christmas decorations in our garden window but someone chose to "steal" her gift. Upon hearing this replay of events, I immediately and quietly got online to see if I could find the right size sled... I found a package of three sleds that were the exact size she said she had at the Yankee Swap... so, she was excited and surprised to see she had her sleds again! It was a hard find but I managed to get the book "Wicked" for Sheila at a rare reasonable price... a...

A Weekend Trip... or Nightmare

T his past weekend, Sheila and I headed to Saratoga Springs for a youth hockey tournament. Lukey's team was playing in this tournament and Sheila and I enjoy visiting Saratoga Springs so we made reservations the moment we heard about this tournament. I didn't sleep much, if at all, on Thursday night due to a painful sore throat and what seems like a head cold. When we got out of bed on Friday morning, I immediately tested for COVID. If I tested positive, we would be cancelling our plans for the weekend and staying home. I tested negative though so we packed up and headed out within a couple of hours. False negatives are a big issue with these testing kits so you are supposed to test again at 48 hours. If you test negative again but are still symptomatic, then you're supposed to test again another 24 hours later... and, I think, once again 24 hours later if still symptomatic. We're back home now, 48 hours later, and I tested neg...

Garden Trains on Christmas Eve

W e awoke to some snow again this morning. There was only about six inches out there but it is supposed to warm up today with some mixed precipitation so I needed to clear the driveway and rake the roof before it got wet and heavy. Wet and heavy isn't good for the roof nor is it good for my extensive spinal injuries. Then it would all freeze again tonight and that would make it impossible to move so it needed to be done this morning. While I was on the roof looking down on our little garden railroad in the backyard, I was reminded that I never did get a photo of this garden layout from the roof. Lukey and I talked about capturing a few photos from the roof one day this summer but that day was far too hot to climb up on an asphalt roof! As it was, we were chasing the shade with lawn chairs while we ran trains so we could stay as cool as possible. Traditional Christmas Eve Dinner

W e just finished eating our traditional delicious Christmas Eve dinner and it was tender and absolutely delicious! I encrusted the rib roast with fresh minced garlic, thyme, parsley, salt, pepper and olive oil. I seared it on the grill and then slow roasted it in the oven... Although it appears to be rather small in this photo, below, it is a 5 lb rib roast. This is how it looked when I took it out of the oven... The roast was unbelievably tender and tasted great. I made some mashed potatoes with sauteed onions. Our side dish was carrots with a sauce of butter, brown sugar and maple syrup. Of course, I made gravy too but I didn't add it to the dish until after the photos... the gravy covers what I'm attempting to photograph so I shot the photos first... And, lastly, I made some Yorkshire Pudding which was also delicious! The last two times I have made this, however, they have stuck in the muffin pan so I think we need a new pan....

Another Big Christmas Surprise

L ukey and Kenzie have been dying to take a long distance trip on Amtrak for many years. Last Christmas, we were booked to take Amtrak to Manhattan with Lukey and Kenzie but our train was cancelled as we were waiting for it to arrive in Waterbury. It was cancelled due to flooding here in Vermont and, at the last minute, we decided our only option was to drive down to Manhattan instead. That means Lukey and Kenzie missed out on a huge part of last Christmas' surprise trip. That Amtrak travel was supposed to be the highlight of the trip but it was cancelled! They were definitely sorely disappointed but we still had a great time in Manhattan at Christmastime. That train cancellation really put a big damper on the trip though which we were reminded of constantly during the long 12 hours in the car contending with heavy rain, traffic, and detours in a cramped car rather than a long train allowing us to get up and walk whenever we felt the need. Another Christmas Concert

T he other night, Sheila and I attended a Christmas concert at Ellie's school and watched her perform at her first concert. Last night, we headed out again for a Christmas concert at Lukey and Kenzie's school. This time Lukey was performing. This school has a nice "performing arts" building albeit a bit small. It is an exceptionally small school so perhaps this room is large enough for expected crowd size but it sure seemed quite small to me especially considering the size of the sound gear (big sound for big spaces). The first thing I noticed when we stepped into this building is all the Yamaha sound gear, a few pianos and nice lighting. I found this to be quite impressive since I prefer Yamaha sound gear myself and the photographer in me is always happy to see good, effective and dramatic lighting! Significant Camera Upgrade

F or the past few years, I've had a specific camera body in my "wishlist" at a used camera website where I purchase most of my cameras and lenses. It has sat in this wishlist for a few years because this happens to be a very expensive camera that is well beyond my budget even if purchased on the used market. A few times each week over the course of a few years, I would check the price in the hope that the price would finally hit an affordable range. Fortunately, this used camera store had a big "Black Friday" sale a couple of weeks ago which allowed me to finally purchase this significantly upgraded camera for a ridiculously low price. My primary camera is a Sony a7 but it is the first generation of the a7 series from 2013. Since it was released back in 2013 and was the first full-frame mirrorless camera, consequently, it has some compromises when compared to other cameras released more recently. Ellie's First Christmas Concert

A couple of nights ago, we attended Ellie's first Christmas concert and it was a nice night. After the concert, we walked in a Parade of Light... the kids made lanterns and we walked through town behind a SD Ireland concrete truck covered in Christmas lights (quite erroneously and far too commonly referred to as a 'cee-ment truck'... the civil engineer side of me must point out that ' concrete truck' is the correct term) . Ellie had surgery on her foot recently and was in a boot so, consequently, we lagged behind significantly in this parade through the streets. Fortunately, a police car stayed behind us the whole way to keep traffic from hitting us. After a night of music, Sheila and I stopped at The Whip at The Green Mountain Inn in Stowe for dinner. Most of Presents Wrapped

W e're still waiting on the delivery of a few presents but most of the presents are wrapped and piled up around the Christmas tree now... There is still a lot to be done around the house before we can celebrate Christmas with the grandkids but things are slowly coming along.

Christmas Fast Approaching

I don't know why for sure but Thanksgiving and Christmas really caught us by surprise this year. My internal clock is feeling like it is only early autumn. It isn't like we've been busy with a full schedule of events or travel. We've been home. The summer was wet and pretty much non-existent. It doesn't even feel like we had a summer. Summer and fall have been filled with waiting for our new water main to be installed and hooked up to the house. And, more recently, we've had nothing but problems with that hook-up to the house which is needlessly sapping me of what little energy I have these days. I'm trying to think back on what messed up our internal clocks. This year started with a few months of COVID yet again. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I've been sick with COVID from January through March/April every year. This past year I picked up the virus in Manhattan just before Christmas and was sick and continually testing...
