Another Weekend with Kenzie and Lukey

Image
Kenzie and Lukey spent some time with us this past weekend and, as always, we had a great time with them! For dinner, I prepared Kenzie's favorite meal which is a recipe I obtained from my grandmother almost 40 years ago. When I was in high school and college, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house. My sailboat was kept in their backyard because they lived on the water on the south shore of Long Island so I would go there to go sailing but I also visited frequently to help them out and just say hello. Gramps was still working at the time and every now and then I would go to work with him. My grandmother regularly needed help around the house since having serious heart problems a few years earlier so I would spend some time with Gramps on the weekends when he was home from work and I would spend time with my grandmother during the weekdays as I helped out around the house, mowed the lawn, and ran some errands for her. My cousin, William, and I would make sure one

A Weekend with the Grandkids

The grandkids stayed with us over the past weekend and it was a nice break from all this fun cancer stuff. We haven't had much of an opportunity to spend time with them since the lake house early in the summer so it was nice to spend a whole weekend with them.  Shortly after our time at the lake house, the doctors found Sheila's cancer and our life instantly and drastically changed. We've been at the hospital every weekday getting worn down and then trying to catch up on sleep on the weekends. We both feel as though it has been months and months of grueling nothingness.  There has been absolutely no socializing since the cancer was found except for when Sheila would get an occasional visitor although we haven't had any visitors in the past few weeks. Actually, we've been a bit socially deprived so it was nice to have the weekend with the grandkids. I think we watched about eight Christmas movies over the course of the weekend. And, we played about a bajillion

Kenzie and Lukey Arrived at the Lake

Image
Kenzie and Lukey stealthily arrived at the lake house this morning. Sheila and I were doing some food shopping in preparation to their arrival but they arrived at the house before we did... We saw Liza's car in our parking area when we arrived home... we pulled the car up to the back door so we could unload the car... but we found the back door to the house was still locked! I retrieved the key we hid for Liza... it was still in it's hiding place... and we entered the quiet house...  When we got to the living room, we could hear unrestrainable giggling coming from the loft... sure enough, Kenzie, Lukey and Liza were hiding in the loft and Kenzie was giggling uncontrollably! Before mommy had to leave for the day to work, we had some lunch. Fortunately, for Kenzie, we had just finished food shopping so we had a full refrigerator of food to choose from... naturally, she chose her usual staple, fresh strawberries... and some Mickey Mouse chips, some cheese, and a small bowl o

A Quiet Birthday at Home

Image
We had a small, quiet birthday celebration at home yesterday. Although small and quiet, I am still exhausted today and in need of a long nap. I think I am still recovering from our time at the lake house as well as being in need of some recovery time after overdoing it a week ago.  My birthday started with a very nicely written note and card from Sheila... then a nice letter from a friend at the lake informing us that two loon chicks were born that morning. The chicks were named Janice and Janet. I had been concerned about the seemingly low numbers of loons at the lake thus far so it was nice to hear we have two new young additions to the loon population at the lake... coincidentally born on my own birthdate. This was actually a nice birthday surprise. The grandchildren were with us for dinner and cake. They had some fun with the O gauge trains on the living room floor for most of the evening. We set up a diagonal oval of track across the living room floor that went around and
