A Night with a Grandchild

Image
Our youngest grandchild spent some time with us this past weekend and we had a good time with him! He is beginning to talk now.  Whenever he wanted something to eat, his word for that was "mom" which is very much in line with what my first psychology professor had taught me many decades ago...  mom = refrigerator.  When he wanted another Graham cracker, "mom"...  when he wanted more Chex mix, "mom"...   Although he is still not talking much, he had no problems calling out my name but, then again, "papa" is a pretty simple word to repeat for a toddler.   On and off for very short periods of time, he played with some cars, trucks, airplanes and some typical toddler developmental toys.  We had pizza and then he had some bathtime with a few bath toys.  He would occasionally sit next to Gee or me on the couch but, just like with playing with his toys, that never lasted long before he was up and trying to get into something else that he should not be i

Impulse Buys While Exhausted

Image
Our primary impulse buy yesterday... As many of you already know, Sheila and I are worn out, exhausted and quite often we find ourselves walking around in a bit of a daze. I think we're kind of numb.  We've spent far too much time at hospitals since last summer and we are simply worn down and exhausted. No offense to our doctors and our respective medical teams, but we are also sick of doctors and hospitals at this point.  In addition to all these medical appointment and our illnesses, we are also not sleeping too well which is adding to our exhaustion. My extensive spinal injuries, bone pain and joint pain are keeping me up at night not to mention that the past seven months have been a bit stressful and that is contributing to sleep issues as well. Sheila is into a whole slew of new side effects due to her new cancer treatment which includes pain, hot flashes and drenching night-sweats while attempting to get some much needed rest. Difficulty sleeping has been compoun

A Rainy Day Distraction

Image
For the past two or three weeks (it seems like two or three months, actually), Sheila and I have been completely immersed in cancer stuff with little time nor energy for much else.  We've definitely eaten out significantly more often because we simply have had no time to cook on far too many days. All of our attention and all of our energy has been actively and acutely focused on doing everything possible to get beyond Sheila's cancer.  Yesterday morning, Sheila was a bit too emotional for driving to work nevermind working through the day so, instead of driving to work while trying to see through a wall of tears, she called work and arranged to have the day off to regroup. The dreaded thought and knowledge of lymph involvement and metastatizing of her breast cancer was a bit too overwhelming so we called a timeout from everything and we spent the day together doing "normal" things for a change. I took Sheila out to lunch and, for the most part, we talked abou

Kenzie's Weekend

Image
As I wrote in a previous blog entry, the grandkids spent the weekend at our house. Lukey was content with running trains and watching some Florida Gator and Dayton Flyer basketball. Kenzie enjoyed some Florida Gator gymnastics, baking with Gee, playing with her doll collection and even running one of Uncle Adam's diesel locomotives.   First, some photos of Kenzie making some rice crispy treats with Gee... As always, there was quite a bit of time playing a server at a pizza place...  this particular day, she was making and serving pizzas for Jimmz Pizza... "Niiiice locomotive..."
