A Productive Day

Rotten wood cut out and framing in place...

I had a productive day today. Our toilet issue in our master bathroom is just about fixed. I have a few more parts and supplies to buy before I can get anything else accomplished but today was a productive day.

Boy, oh boy... this is messy, stinky work that I do not enjoy in the least! That being said, it will be nice to know that this toilet is secure and not leaking when I'm done.

A couple of days ago, I removed the old toilet... I removed all the wet, nasty finished flooring (it had been ruined by the leaking toilet so it needs to be replaced)... and cut out all the rotten wood. Yesterday, for the most part, I let my spinal injuries recover a bit before tackling some more work today.

Our new ADA dual flush toilet waiting to be installed...
Today, I framed the big hole in our bathroom floor with additional supports and nailers for the new subflooring. Not only did I need nailers for the new solid wood subflooring but I also needed to add some support joists for our new ADA dual flush toilet.

After framing out this stinky, messy hole, I cut some 5/4 lumber to length to use as a solid wood subfloor... cut a hole for the toilet flange and waste pipe... then did the same with a small piece of 1/4" underlayment to bring my new subflooring up to the height of the existing flooring including the layers of old vinyl flooring which will remain in place.

At this point, I'm ready to screw it all in place but I'm out of galvanized deck screws. It turns out I also need a longer braided stainless steel toilet supply hose so I can't finish this job until I get that. This was a good point to stop anyway.

My spine has been screaming throughout all of this work and my legs are not cooperating as a result of spinal inflammation so I may take another day of recovery before tackling the rest of this little unplanned project. In the meantime, I can pick up some supplies.
All new wood in place... flange in place... the ugly vinyl flooring showing here is not our
flooring... we are installing a nice new finished floor on top of what is visible here (which
is why the flange is not glued and screwed in place yet).
