Surprise Dinner Guests

Image
After we had finished cleaning up from our concrete work yesterday and while I was making a pasta salad for dinner, we received a call from Liza saying the kids wanted to come over for dinner.  Naturally, we thought that was a good idea and told them to come on over.   Lukey helped to start a fire...  which was a little smokey at times...  Kenzie was afraid the fire department would show up and I think we all went to bed with slightly irritated eyes!  The kids made some hot dogs on the fire before dinner.  For dinner, we had bacon cheeseburgers and pasta salad. Since it was one of those days when the moon was high in the sky all afternoon, I decided to take one of the telescopes out so the kids could view the moon as night approached... Kenzie had a little difficulty correctly positioning her eye over the huge eyepiece but she eventually figured it out.  If you are too close or too much to one side of the big eyepiece, you sometimes will see nothing.  In this case, mo

Lukey's Fire

Lukey had a burning desire to learn how to start a fire so Liza arranged for a small gathering of people for some hot dogs and s'mores around a fire in Nan and Pop's backyard.  Pop and Lukey had already gathered a huge pile of kindling when Gee and I arrived. Actually, they've been collecting this kindling from the lawn for weeks. The fire pit was ready to go when everyone arrived. The most difficult part of starting this fire was for Lukey to effectively operate the little aim-n-flame lighter. It was obvious that the safety trigger was effective! Even Gee has difficulty with it! Next time, Lukey wants to try to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together.  We'll see how that goes when the time comes. It certainly was nice for Sheila and I to get out of the house for a short while after a rather miserable week. I didn't last long though as my energy level drained very quickly so we called it a night rather early. It was nice getting out of the house though and

Some Much Needed Quiet Days

The epitome of laziness... sitting on a couch behind a boat... The past two days have been quiet, uneventful and relaxing.  Yesterday was a beautiful day but for some reason the wildlife has been in hiding. The loon activity is minimal... even the nights have been mostly absent of the loon calls. We've only seen two loons at a great distance so far. This is quite a departure from the norm. Overall, it has been quite quiet here. During the beautiful weather, yesterday, there were some boaters and water-skiers out and about on the lake... and the occasional lazy children sitting on inflatable couches being pulled behind expensive powerboats. If I had a boat capable of pulling anything, only water skis would be allowed in my boat... none of this inflatable couch nonsense. People, especially many of today's children, are lazy enough. The epitome of laziness has to be sitting on an inflatable couch while being pulled behind a boat! It was fun watching the occasional water-sk
