The Munich Haus

Every year, when we attend the annual Amherst Railway Society's Railroad Hobby Show, we always set aside Saturday evening for a group night out on the town for dinner. The past few years, the place we have chosen for this group night has been a rather unique and lively little restaurant called The Munich Haus... fashioned after a German festhaus albeit smaller and a bit more personal.

We have chosen this restaurant consistently over the past few years for a number of reasons including it is unique, it is cultural, it is something we cannot experience near home, the food is quite good, the desserts are outstanding and it has that happy German festhaus atmosphere and vibe with live music, singing, clapping and, of course, tasty beers!

This little yet always crowded restaurant has a large selection of draft beers from Germany... a vast selection of schnitzels... a long list of different types of sausages... chicken dishes... beef dishes... fish and seafood dishes... vegetarian dishes... delicious salads (really, the salads are amazingly delicious)... potato pancakes... sauerkraut... red cabbage... spatzle... and amazingly rich and delicious desserts. We don't usually order desserts when we eat out but this is one place where you absolutely must save room for some dessert!

Additionally, for the more adventurous, there are always a few wild game dishes on the menu at any given time. We've had alligator (Go Gators... this year's basketball team could be skewered and grilled yet nobody would know the difference)... there is often venison on the menu... rabbit... frog's legs... and whatever else they can get their hands on at any given time. If I remember correctly, during this year's visit, they were also offering some sort of llama dish. Yes...  llama!
Lukey grabbed my camera and snapped a shot of Papa...
(as I held the camera so he wouldn't drop it!)

Lukey ordered an appetizer consisting of fried pickles... delicious fried pickles. Other appetizers worth mentioning are the giant Bavarian pretzel with Obatzda and honey mustard, potato pancakes, Maryland Blue Crab cakes, and potato pierogies. Oh... and did I mention they have a large selection of German draft beers to whet your appetite?

There is a roving accordian player taking requests... I have to admit that I find an accordian to be an exceptionally annoying instrument (a sentiment coming from a musician) but, culturally speaking, the accordian fits into this restaurant just as perfectly as all the German draft beer. Little 33 month old Lukey, however, had a differing opinion about this happy-go-lucky roving accordian player... When the friendly accordian player approached our table wearing a feathery chicken on his head, little Lukey froze like the grim reaper was standing behind him and about to tap him on his shoulder! No... Lukey did not like this guy and, as a result, he was on the brink of losing his composure in a flood of tears.

After a little bit of watching the entire table singing, laughing and clapping in beat with a polka style "I've Been Working On The Railroad" (for the benefit of Lukey, Kenzie and the famous train show), Lukey eventually lightened up and felt a bit more comfortable with the scary guy wearing a chicken on his head.

Lukey is never without his Boston Bruins hockey jersey and this night was no exception. He can pick out that jersey anywhere at any time! As luck would have it, at a table on the other side of the room was a man also wearing a Boston Bruins jersey. Lukey's eyes lit up... he stood up on the long bench seat between Grammy and me and started yelling to this guy on the other side of the room, waving his arms and almost jumping up and down... Lukey caught the guy's attention but I think he was having trouble understanding the excited rantings of a 33 month old boy who is obsessed with trains and hockey...  Lukey pointed at his own chest sporting the big Boston Bruins logo and suddenly the guy knew what Lukey was exuberantly screaming about... the guy smiled and pointed at his own jersey which didn't go unnoticed at his own large table of guests... they all turned around and found the excited hockey fanatic known as Lukey a bit amusing!

This visit to The Munich Haus was also the time when Miss Kenzie introduced her alter ego, Elsa...  See An Alter Ego for Kenzie.

We experienced more than just a good dinner together while out of town for our annual train show... I believe a very memorable and fulfilling time was had by all. Our table full of tasty German food and drinks was mouthwateringly delicious and it was a lot of fun. Additionally, the service at this unique restaurant is outstanding making us feel a bit special, appreciated and even happier about choosing this establishment for our group dinner.

Oh... as I always try to do with all our experiences, don't forget the fact that we added a bit of culture to our weekend!

"A little bit of culture never hurt anyone."
