A Walk to Kentucky
While we were in Cincinnati with Kenzie and Lukey, we chose to walk from downtown Cincinnati across one of the bridges and into Newport, Kentucky. Our destination was the Newport Aquarium across the river in Kentucky. It was a really nice day albeit a bit too hot and humid. Regardless of the oppressing heat, it really was a great day for a walk.
We each had a drink, a sling bag and three of us were carrying cameras...
Once we were out of the hotel, we made our way southeast toward the Cincinnati Reds' ball field on the Ohio River...
The Reds had a game on this day but we had arrived at the ball field before the crowd. The ball field just happened to be on our way to the bridge over the Ohio River.
Now we are at the waterfront park and walking toward one of those bridges in the distance...
On our way to the aquarium in Kentucky, we chose to walk over the Purple People Bridge which is a pedestrian-only bridge...
Now we are on the bridge and looking back toward the ball field...
We made it to Newport a bit more quickly than I expected. Below, we are looking toward Cincinnati...
Our hotel is among that small group of buildings to the left of the tallest building...
Below is the Purple People Bridge that we crossed over the Ohio River...
I explained in a previous blog entry that we didn't realize that we needed to schedule a reservation to get into the aquarium so we had a few hours to kill. In an effort to kill some time, we walked along the river to the site of the old Newport Barracks...
Below, Sheila is climbing the very steep stairs to the flagpole at the site of the Newport Barracks at General James Taylor Park...
Below is a slightly different view of Cincinnati from the flagpole at the barracks...
Sheila and Mackenzie are carefully climbing back down the steep staircase from the flagpole...
After our additional short walk to the Newport Barracks, we headed back toward the aquarium. We still had some time to kill before our scheduled visit at the aquarium so we sat under cover on the patio of one of the restaurants and ordered a few cold drinks and some appetizers...
This area of the riverfront in Newport has changed significantly since our last visit. There is now plenty to do in this area. These people in red t-shirts and red hats are headed to the Cincinnati Red baseball game. We passed a lot of Reds fans on our walk! We were headed to Kentucky while they were headed the opposite direction to Ohio...
And, here is one more photo of Cincinnati from Newport. I think I shot this photo while we were sitting at a picnic table behind the aquarium waiting for our scheduled entrance time...
Walking over to Newport was a good idea. The only real risk was that there was a chance we would get caught in an afternoon thundershower which happened everyday we were in Ohio due to the high humidity. Fortunately, we had nothing but sunny weather for our walk to and from Kentucky.
As you may have already seen in my previous blog entry about the aquarium, we enjoyed our visit to the aquarium too!
